WHAT IS TAI CHI?

Tai Chi Chuan (translated Supreme Ultimate Boxing) is a fine product of Chinese philosophy and culture. Based upon the principles of the I Ching (Book of Changes) and the philosophy of Yin and Yang, Tai Chi is a system of rounded, flowing, balanced movements to be practiced daily for health and peace of mind. In recent years, this form of exercise has been used for nervous tension, arthritis, ulcer, high blood pressure and for good circulation of the blood.

There are several styles of Tai Chi, the original being the Chen Style. The principle and object of all styles are the same; to teach one to know oneself and to improve one's well being both psychologically and physically. It also improves one's sensitivity to others/opponents and increases one's awareness of his/her environment.

HISTORY OF TAI CHI CHUAN

The most widespread story of the beginning of Tai Chi Chuan is that of Chang San Feng (1279 - 1368 AD).

This legend states that Chang San - Feng one day heard a noise, going to his window he observed a snake hissing at a crane in a tree. When the bird flew down and attacked with his beak, the crane was unable to land a solid blow. The snake twisted and dodged and was always out of reach. From this Chang San Feng learned the value of yielding in the face of strength.

Studying the movements of the snake and crane, other wild animals and natural phenomena, Chang San Feng devised Tai Chi Chuan.

The exact details are unknown, but Tai Chi Chuan was passed to a family named Chen in Honan Province. The Chen family kept Tai Chi Chuan a secret for fourteen generations.

Eventually Tai Chi was taught outside of the Chen family to a man named Yang Lu Chan. Yang developed his own style based upon the principles of the Chen family Tai Chi Chuan. Yang Style is the most well known form of Tai Chi around the world today.
